A Kitchen Remodeling DIY Project: Replacing the Kitchen Sink
If you're not sure you want to take on an entire kitchen
remodeling project yourself, a good way to find out is to tackle
replacing your kitchen sink. You'll need the right tools for the
kitchen remodeling project, however. This includes: adjustable
wrench, 10" pipe wrench, screwdriver, pliers, hacksaw, basin
wrench, a hammer, flex-supplies, caulking and plumbers putty. If
you aren't familiar with some of these supplies, a consultant in
you're the kitchen remodeling section of your local home
improvement store can guide you in making the right purchases.
Besides these supplies, you'll also need a new kitchen sink. Be
sure to check out the various designs available in the kitchen
remodeling section of your home improvement store.
It's a good idea to obtain a kitchen remodeling book with
plumbing diagrams if you haven't attempted a kitchen remodeling
project that involves plumbing before now. Replacing a kitchen
sink is low of the scale of kitchen remodeling project
difficulty, but a good set of plumbing diagrams can be
invaluable.
The first step in this kitchen remodeling project is to shut off
the hot and cold water supply valves. Next, disconnect the water
supplies from the faucet and be sure
to remove the drain pipe
and the anchor clips that hold the sink in place. After that,
all you have to do to proceed with your kitchen remodeling
project is take out the old sink and then place the faucet and
strainer on the new sink. Tighten the nuts on the faucet and use
some putty to hold the strainer. Next, you'll need to tighten
the flex supplies on the faucet. If the sink you chose for this
kitchen remodeling project isn't self-rimming; all you need to
do is put the sink into place and tighten the anchor clips. If
it is, apply caulking to the perimeter of the countertop.
Use the flex water supplies on the valves, tighten and then move
on to connecting the drain pipe to the strainer. Now, all that's
left for this kitchen remodeling project is opening the main
water valve and the valves under the sink. Clean up any caulking
residue and to let the water run through for a few minutes. If
there aren't any leaks, you can chalk this kitchen remodeling
project up as a success.
